7 Regular Mistakes That Will Ruin Your Spa Experience

Hello folks! Here’s what you should watch out for before you book your next spa appointment to ensure you step out all happy and healthy.

  1. Decode The Therapy Type: Never mind its fancy title, make sure you know whether you are opting for a dry, oil-based or cream-based massage as part of the treatment. Obvious as it may sound, this is a common mistake most occasional spa-goers make.
  2. Know Your Allergies: While you may not know each oil or fragrance that makes your head spin, if you are allergic to strong odours/extremely sweet scents, let the receptionist know in advance. This will ensure your room is clear of any candles or oils that can cause you a throbbing headache.
  3.  Opt For Professionals: This includes everybody, right from the champiwallahs and the mallishwalis, to the masseuses and chiropractors. Go for a therapist who works independently or at a spa that thrives purely on its service value and not just because it’s part of a wellness complex or a fancy hotel frequented by tired tourists.

  4. Look Beyond The Frills: Nothing, and nothing can make up for a brilliant massage followed by a good steam and/or soak. While relaxing foot soaks, scrubs, masks and refreshments are all great and tempting value-adds, make sure you they are not cutting into your massage and steam/soak time. A really good spa package will give you atleast 45 to 60 minutes of body massage followed by 15 minutes of steam/soak to ensure you are truly relaxed. The rest is all cherry on the cake.
  5. Set The Music Right: Not all spas offer many options in this regard. While most stick to an Oriental theme (at least in Asia), it is best to carry music that you personally find soothing to avoid last minute disappointments. One of the most over-looked aspects at most spas, this is 50% of your relaxation.
  6. Plan Your Post-Spa Time: Indulging in a spa is pointless if you squeeze it in on a busy day. The last thing you want to do after feeling relaxed is head-dive into a meeting or a chore. Instead, plan it on a day where you can just take it slow it off for the next hour or two if not the rest of the day. It gives you time to maximize your tranquil time.
  7. Switch Off: No matter how much you are paying for that spa session, if you are waiting for a ping whether your phone is on or not, you have already ruined your zen zone. Put both, your phone, and thoughts of it out of reach.
